Another historic milestone for Môreglans

Môreglans Old Age Home recently upgraded its kitchen for residents in celebration of their milestone birthday.

On June 16, SAVF Môreglans Old Age Home celebrated its 114th birthday.

According to the old age home’s manager, Susan Bezuidenhout, despite growing over the years and improving its facilities for elders, the home continues to make significant strides in ensuring that the elderly are well cared for.

On June 27, the home opened its newly renovated kitchen and dining hall, with massive improvements including new dishwashers, gas stoves and kitchen sinks among others.

She added a project was launched in 2012 called 1 000 Hearts and for the last 12 years, Môreglans has received monthly donations since then. She said they have also been using those funds to improve the lives of elders who use their services.

“The projects over the years include a new boiler being installed in 2021 along with the main hall’s chairs being upholstered, a new industrial tumble drier being purchased in 2022 and a new industrial washing machine being purchased in 2023. This year there have been three projects that have been completed to upgrade the home,” Bezuidenhout said.

In addition to these projects, earlier this year they also refurbished the laundry room with newly tiled walls and floors, new pipes were installed and an industrial iron was purchased. The most recent project was the upgrade of the kitchen and dining hall. In addition, they also have a new industrial blender, a waffle maker and jaffel pans.

Caterers manager Maria Sehwana.

“The home accommodates 70 elders who I’m sure will be happy with the improvements we have made for them,” she said.

According to the home’s official website, the house was founded on the initiative of Georgiana Solomon (a Scottish woman) in Pretoria on 19 October 1904 at the home of Annie Botha, wife of General Louis Botha. This occasion was attended by a group of women deeply concerned about the dire circumstances after the Anglo-Boer War. The first SAVF (Suid-Afrikaanse Vrouefederasie) Old Age Home, Môreglans, opened its doors on June 16, 1910, in Krugersdorp with four residents. Over the years, more SAVF Old Age Homes were opened in various provinces nationwide.
