World Food Safety Day celebrated at Pinehaven filling station

Learn how consumers' food safety and health standards are ensured.

The Sasol service station in Pinehaven, in collaboration with Assurecloud, commemorated World Food Safety Day with a series of events to educate South African consumers on the necessity of safe, hygienic food and beverage preparation and storage.

This is consistent with Sasol’s overall commitment to being customer-focused and protecting the health of the communities in which it operates.

The World Health Organisation’s (WHO) sixth World Food Safety Day (June 7) drew attention to food safety incidents, where a potential or confirmed health risk is associated with food consumption. A food incident can happen, for example, due to accidents, inadequate controls, food fraud, or natural events.

In support of the global initiative, managers and franchise owners at Sasol’s 300 convenience centres took a pledge to adhere to the most rigorous food safety standards. These are backed up by inspections based on regulation 638, a regulation under the Foodstuffs, Cosmetics and Disinfectants Act, (Act No 54 of 1972) from Sasol’s food safety partner, Assurecloud.

“Millions of South Africans stop at our Convenience Centres to get sustenance on their way to various destinations. World Food Safety Day is a great opportunity to underline what we are doing at Sasol to comply with the strictest quality and safety standards,” said Pamela Anderson, a senior manager of convenience trading at Sasol.

“According to WHO, foodborne diseases affect one in 10 people worldwide each year, and food standards help us to ensure that what we eat is safe. After several major food incidents in South Africa in recent years, we know there is no room for complacency,” Pamela further elaborated.

Marina Sander, the head of sales at Assurecloud, added, “Our collaboration with Sasol exemplifies our mutual commitment to making the world a safer place, driven by the understanding that life is precious. We are honoured to support Sasol in its mission and look forward to our continued efforts in safeguarding the well-being of every consumer.”

The celebratory activation events took place at 50 Sasol forecourts, across all provinces.
