NPO funding: Good news for The Bethany House Trust

The Bethany House Trust will keep its head above water for the next few months following a High Court decision.

The Bethany House Trust (BHT) is satisfied with the significant progress made in its partnership with the Department of Social Development (DSD).

“We are pleased with the progress made in ‘regulating the partnership’ between NPOs and DSD going forward,” said BHT CEO Gert Jonker.

This brings some relief after the Krugersdorp News reported in its May 31 edition that BHT was on the verge of a shutdown. According to Jonker at the time, they had not received any payments from the DSD, despite promises of immediate payments towards NPOs.

Jonker added, “We welcome the order made by the High Court. The court order ensures that BHT can focus on service delivery for the next few months instead of fighting bureaucracy. BHT will work with DSD, as we have been for decades, and the entire welfare sector to ensure that the voices of the poor, marginalised and vulnerable citizens of Gauteng are heard loud and clear.

“Practically, the court order implies that BHT has a lifeline for a few months to remain operational for the benefit of our beneficiaries, who are primarily vulnerable children and youth,” he concluded.
