Paardekraal Drive crash: ‘I am glad my daughter and grandson are alive’

The mother and her son who sustained life-threatening injuries in a two-vehicle crash on Paardekraal Drive are recovering in hospital.

Late last Friday evening, April 5, a serious crash occurred on Paardekraal Drive leaving five people injured.

Two of the injured, 41-year-old Bronwyn Smith and her son Henriko (6) sustained serious injuries and were transported to hospital.

Bronwyn is currently in hospital and sustained a large cut on her forehead, a broken shoulder, and a broken leg which required surgery. Henriko was transferred to a hospital in Soweto due to a severe loss of blood. Both of his legs were broken and there was damage to his face due to the airbags. He also had to go for an emergency operation on April 6.

Valmai Rennie, Bronwyn’s mother, was the first family member on the scene where fire department chaplain, Charl Langenhoven decided to immediately escort her to the hospital. Considering the emergency, Langenhoven blocked off traffic to get Rennie to her daughter as soon as possible.

“I am thankful that my daughter and grandson are alive and how great the hospitals are treating them,” said Rennie.

Laerskool Kenmare is also helping her cope by sending them food packages every day.

The three other people who were travelling in a Jeep, two men and a woman, sustained light to moderate injuries only. The Krugersdorp News approached one of the occupants for comment, but he declined.
