Service above self for Rotary members and friends

Members of the Rotary Club of Krugersdorp held a function to honour good Samaritans and NPOs at Golden Age Village.

The Krugersdorp Rotary Club hosted a Friends of Rotary evening function last week to thank members and organisations in the community for rendering services to needy people in and around town.

Gert Jonker from The Bethany House Trust was recognised with a Merit Award for outstanding ‘Service Above Self’ – the principal motto of Rotary because it best conveys the philosophy of unselfish volunteer service as described by the official Rotary International website. According to Krugersdorp Rotary Club president Lynnete Musgrove, interest was accumulated from a trust created by the West Rand Show Trust, which is distributed yearly to welfare organisations to serve the community which they support. This year, the money was donated to NPOs such as Cradle of Hope, Lighthouse, Gateway, Bethany House and the Gideon’s Bible Association. Fixed amounts from the show funds were allocated to organisations to invest and to use the interest for the work they do in the community.

Minister Kala Fourie from the Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk in Krugersdorp West reported on how the funds they received were used to help people in their community. Others who benefited were Rata Child and Family Welfare and DR Church Social Services.

The evening ended on a ravenous note when dinner was served which was well-prepared by the Rotary Anns of Krugersdorp.
