Correctional Services show their charitable side

The community, councillors, NGOs, and members of the Krugersdorp Department of Correctional Services broke a sweat for a good cause recently.

If they’re not safeguarding the local prison by ensuring criminals remain behind bars, they are out and about ensuring many youngsters starting big school, are accommodated.

On January 24, the Krugersdorp Department of Correctional Services hosted a back-to-school run/ walk and outreach for underprivileged children who cannot afford school uniforms and stationery.

The initiative is being referred to as the Managers Special Programme. The programme is done annually according to programme co-ordinator Daleen Kruger and besides to bring bringing staff together and encouraging them to be fit and healthy they also come up with outreach initiatives to assist the community.

Members of the public were also invited.

More than 100 people including Mogale City councillors, representatives of NGOs in and around the West Rand as well as the public donated school uniforms and clothes before participating in the 8km run or walk around Krugersdorp West.

“This programme was among the many community programmes conducted by the Department of Correctional Services. Throughout the year, we have various other programmes focusing on gender-based violence, school safety and crime,” concluded Kruger.
