Municipality, IEC encourage residents to register on Feb 3 and 4

Residents are urged to register as the final registration weekend looms.

Mogale City Local Municipality (MCLM) along with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) urge residents to diarise the weekend of February 3 to 4 for what would be the second and final voter registration weekend ahead of the 2024 national and provincial elections.

The country has 23 296 voting stations that will open from 08:00 to 17:00 on Saturday, February 3 and Sunday, February 4. This is to allow new voters to register and for existing voters to inspect and if necessary update their registration details.

According to the IEC, citizens aged 16 years and older can register to vote but need to provide a South African identity document which is either a green bar-coded ID book, a smartcard ID or a valid temporary ID certificate.

The IEC also added that when registering, voters will also need to provide their address or a description of where they live to allow the Electoral Commission to place them on the correct segment of the voters’ roll. However, proof of an address is not a requirement to register as a voter.

For those who are dependent on online registration, the IEC said the online voter registration portal remains available until the date of when elections commence for first-time voters to register and for those who are already registered to update their registration details.

Registered voters can visit the IEC’s website to check their current registration details and voting station location. They can also SMS their ID number to 32810 to receive an SMS containing the address of their voting station (charged at R1).

For more information, the IEC’s contact centre continues to be operational to assist citizens with queries and information about the registration process and information related to location of voting station. The contact centre, which can be reached on 0800 11 8000 operates from 08:00 to 17:00 weekdays.

Our local Electoral Commission Office can be reached at 104 Monument Street, Krugersdorp or call 011 951 2314.
