Hospital shines the spotlight on cancer

Netcare Krugersdorp Private Hospital donated R26 000 as part of their cancer awareness campaign.

If there is one group of people who knows about the struggle of facing cancer fighters it would be the personnel from Netcare Krugersdorp Private Hospital.

It is only fair to say that these medical professionals have a soft spot for their patients and a zeal for the battle against cancer – from diagnosis to treatment and, finally, the act or process of remission, these people carry survivors and their families. They have recently shown how big that passion is when they held a raffle and donated money to organisations on the West Rand.

On November 14, representatives from each of the hospital’s wards joined sister Martie Joubert for the prize-giving and raffle.

The raffle tickets were sold to the public as well as the full multidisciplinary team and through these sales, the hospital donated R20 000 to Reach for Recovery, an NPO that offers emotional and practical support to people diagnosed with breast cancer. The team also donated R6 000 to Knitted Knockers, an organisation that presents an alternative to breast cancer survivors who have had mastectomies or lumpectomies with radiation. Knitted Knockers are a soft comfortable, light alternative to traditional breast prostheses.

Prizes were given for the best-decorated area of the hospital and the reception department took third place, followed by the children’s ward. Ronel Venter Physiotherapy was the winner and received a R1 000 gift voucher from the hospital. The Noordheuwel ward sold the most tickets and also won a R1 000 voucher sponsored by Dr Fathima Docrat. Ronel Venter Physiotherapy also won for selling the most raffle tickets and raised more than R9 000 for the cancer awareness event.

The team from Reach for Recovery are Christine Oelofse, Maggie du Plooy, and Lidia Balepile with Matron Annelie Bester.

Dr Docrat also sponsored her service for 10 women who meet the breast cancer criteria, to come for a free breast exam at her rooms.

There were 15 amazing raffle prizes up for grabs and after all the festivities the hospital sponsored 50 wellness bags to the Noordheuwel ward to hand out to their cancer patients. These bags were handmade and filled with a small blanket, water bottle, socks, earphones, lip balm and more.

Matron Annelie Bester thanked everyone for their help, especially sister Joubert who co-ordinated everything.

Joubert said that they will continue to raise awareness and support organisations of this nature.
