Monument Cricket on top

The U9 cricket team from Monument Primary School claimed the bragging rights on the West Rand having won the league recently.

Monument Primary School’s U9 cricket team has recently won the Gauteng West League 1.

Besides bringing home the silverware, nine of the 12 boys also made it into the U9 Gauteng West cricket team.

They are:

• Henk Botje
• Brody van der Merwe
• Joshua Scott Dawkins
• Joshua van der Bank
• Elih Andre
• Mark Knight
• Carter Els
• Cooper Thomas
• Nicholas Truter

According to team coach Jason Godwin, this is also a record for Monument Primary as it’s the most boys to ever be selected for Gauteng West in a specific age group.

“The boys displayed great performances even though they competed against many top schools on the West Rand including Laerskool Muldersdrif, Laerskool Kenmare, Laerskool Krugersdorp-Noord and Laerskool Protearif. The team scored a total of 1 402 runs and took 57 wickets throughout the tournament which shows their dominance. They would go on and really hit their straps during the play-off games winning the semi-final by 188 runs and the final by 168 runs.”

According to Jason, it would not be enough to name an individual player for outstanding performances as several players put their hands up.

The following players, however, stood out:

• Joshua van der Bank scored 433 runs including three centuries
• Brody van der Merwe scored 233 runs including three fifties
• Mark Knight took 13 wickets at a strike rate of 13.8 with an economy of 4.7 runs per over
• Carter Els took 10 wickets at a strike rate of 16.8 with an economy of 3.9 runs per over

“Monument Primary School is very proud of their youngsters for this incredible achievement and hope they will bring in more prizes for the school.”
