Kagiso celebrates SA’s cultural wealth

Local NGO Girls Grow Group hosted a Heritage Day programme for residents of Kagiso.

Heritage Day (on September 24) is usually when the wealth of the nation is recognised and celebrated.

South Africans celebrate the day by remembering the cultural heritage of the many cultures that make up the population of South Africa. Various events were staged throughout the country to commemorate this day and the Girls Grow Group, a community organisation based in Kagiso, held a programme for youth and residents.

Children at the event all took part in the traditional Tswana dance.

The day saw many attendees and visitors embracing their heritage by wearing authentic African clothing, singing African hymns, and relishing delicious African cuisines.

Founder of Girls Grow Group Nthabiseng Nalane was happy with the turnout and highlighted the importance of celebrating Heritage Day.

“Heritage Day is a day of commemoration for all South Africans. To teach kids about their roots, who they are, and where they come from is important for any culture. Knowledge of self is more empowering as people will be proud of not just their origins and culture but also the belief systems, customs and way of life,” Nthabiseng said.
