Tiger-striped dog not even from South Africa

Following rumours of a leopard sighting in Kagiso, the News posted a comical article using a photo of a dog painted like a tiger.

The Krugersdorp News recently wrote an article about a leopard that was allegedly spotted in Kagiso and along with it a picture was posted of a dog’s fur painted with stripes to resemble a tiger.

The story followed rumours of a leopard spotted in the cemetery near Azaadville and the News followed up.

The News confirmed with numerous animal welfare organisations that no leopard was spotted nor was any evidence of a leopard in the area produced.

To make light of the situation, the News posted the photo of a dog painted like a tiger and asked if this may have been the animal that was spotted.

Days passed and no evidence of the leopard’s sighting or its existance has been forthcoming.

Thus it may be fair to say that there is no leopard in Kagiso.

Unfortunately the story was picked up by another media house which stated that the tiger-striped dog in the photo was found and that was the cause for the chaos, which is not true.

The dog in the photo is called Wag and according to the Bangalore Mirror, Wag means tiger and its owner Nagaraj Mestha painted the stripes to deter monkeys from raiding his fields. Wag’s stripes were made with hair dye.
