WATCH: Is there really a leopard in Kagiso?

No confirmed reports of a leopard in Kagiso but the verdict is still out.

Residents from Munsieville to Kagiso are keeping a watchful eye following rumours that a leopard is on the loose in the area.

This morning (September 28) the News did some digging and wanted to find out if there is a leopard in Kagiso. Unfortunately, none of the organisations that were contacted could confirm with certainty that a leopard had indeed been spotted.

It is alleged that the leopard was spotted in the Kagiso cemetery near Azaadville.

The area where the leopard is believed to have been seen.

The South African Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, however, stated on social media that, “We have received reports of a leopard in the Kagiso area. Please do not approach it if seen! Kindly contact us [The South African Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre] so we can ensure it and humans remain safe.”

The numbers provided are for Georgina on 082 559 7105 and Judy on 073 112 1131.

It is also suggested that this could have been a Serval cat which has a higher probability of being spotted in the area.

As always, residents saw the light side of things and commented on the following:

• Michael Matthews — “I told you to get rid of that onesie.”
• Johan Botes — “At least he can’t bite someone to death there.”
• Annemarie and Heinrich Sterlin — “Its a serval (tier boskat)… I have spotted some in the Kasigo/ Azaadville area.”
• Stephan van der Berg — “I saw this cat about a week ago at the back of Sterkfontein Hospital.”
• Adriaan Volschenk — “It should be called ‘Def Leppard’”
• Evert du Bruyn — “A leopard is always spotted… that’s why they are so hard to ‘see’!”

Although a video was posted on social media, the origins of the video as well as the area is not known and it can not be said with certainty that the leopard is walking around in Kagiso.

If you have confirmation about the leopard or even photo evidence, let the News know at natashap@caxton.co.za.

If, however, there is indeed a leopard roaming in Kagiso, the News will inform the community accordingly.
