Operation Shanela held in Krugersdorp: 71 arrests made within hours

Various law enforcement members made their presence felt in Mogale City during Operation Shanela.

Law enforcement agencies are continuing their relentless war on crime with yet another Operation Shanela that took place in Krugersdorp over the weekend.

The stakeholders and social partners who collaborated in the operation included Crime Prevention Wardens, various security companies, local Community Policing Forums, community patrollers, and police to crack down on crime in Mogale City. The operation had five phases comprising a roadblock, a vehicle control point (VCP), and three crime prevention groups.

The groups focused their disruptive activities in areas such as Krugersdorp CBD, Munsieville, West Village, Noordheuwel, Kenmare, Wentworth Park, Quelleriepark and Mindalore whereas the other crime prevention and flash groups were operating in Muldersdrift, Nooitgedacht, Rietfontein, Zwartkop, the Phikoko informal settlement, Video centre and Featherbrooke.

About 71 arrests were made in total during the operation with visible policing deploying 40 police officers and 31 detectives.

Of the arrests initiated by visible policing, 36 were stopped and found to be driving under the influence of alcohol with one perpetrator selling liquor without a license. Over 72 270ml of liquor was also confiscated as well and undocumented persons were arrested. Detectives also successfully traced and arrested a suspect wanted for murder.

Other arrests during the operation included:

• Seven people for assault GBV
• Two for common assault
• One for housebreaking and theft
• Four for possession of stolen property
• Seven for theft
• Two for fraud
• Two for malicious damage to property
• One for reckless and negligence driving
• One for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition
• Two for pointing a firearm
• One for resisting an arrest

Operations commander Brigadier Happy Xaba thanked all officers, members, and social partners who contributed to the success of the operation on behalf of the West Rand District Police Commissioner.

All arrested suspects will appear in the Krugersdorp Magistrate’s Court soon.
