Fire outbreak at landfill site: Municipality reveals recovery plan

The municipality's operations team will asses the landfill site after this past weekend's fire.

Following the fire that broke out at Luipaardvlei Landfill Site on August 26, the Mogale City Local Municipality (MCLM) has put recovery plans in place to ensure that it does not happen again.

MCLM confirmed that the cause of the fire was a result of strong winds during the early morning hours on Saturday.

“We would like to inform residents and councillors that all efforts are underway to obtain the necessary equipment which will assist in restoring Luipaardsvlei Landfill site operations as soon as possible,” Mogale City’s manager of Waste Management Dominic Nyakana confirmed to the Krugersdorp News, further stating that the municipality will work with other departments and external players on a recovery plan.

The operations team will assemble at the site as early as possible to assess the situation and determine a plan of action required to ensure that operations return to normal as early as possible today (August 28).

”A small area will be open for early customers, we will be working with other departments on a recovery plan to make sure that everyone comes to the party to make sure that it is a success. Although this is the first time Mogale City experienced this we will make sure that it does not happen again,” Nyakana said.

The municipality has worked with emergency services to make sure the fire was contained and that no stone was unturned. MMC for Integrated Environmental Management, Xolilie Mkruquli praised residents for their patience and cooperation.

The municipality will follow up as it continues with its investigations and remedial actions that will be put in place.
