Fixing potholes in the Village for Mandela Day

Residents from West Village decided to fix massive potholes as part of their 67 minutes of giving back on Mandela Day.

Three residents from West Village spent their 67 minutes for Mandela Day fixing potholes.

The community of West Village and road users who use Tom Muller Road had to dodge a massive pothole when turning onto the R28. On 18 July Isaac Sekuroana, Japie Molelekwa and Ntombi Nxumalo decided to take things into their own hands.

Japie explained that they used crushed gravel and cement that was donated to them to fill the large potholes. He explained to the Krugersdorp News that they wanted to fix all the potholes up until the entrance to West Village but with only three bags of cement, they did not know how far they will get.

“This hole has been here many years and no one takes responsibility for it,” he explained.

He added that one of the biggest issues with the West Village roads is the big mining trucks that come through the village and damage the roads.

“This is no longer a pothole, it is a swimming pool,” he laughingly said.

The team vowed that this is not a once-off initiative and that they will continue to maintain the potholes and fill them up if they become a problem again.

While fixing the potholes, many cars and trucks came past and thanked the team for their work, some even gave a little tip.
