Black Eagles choose tried and tested nest for new breeding season

"The Eagles are in the process of preparing the nest for the new breeding season and we're expecting them to lay the first egg within the next 14 days."

It looks like the Black Eagles at Walter Sisulu Botanical Garden have finally decided on the nest for this year’s breeding season, the same nest as last season. Readers are encouraged to monitor all the eagle’s activities on the Africam camera.

The breeding pair, Makatsa and Mahlori, is busy preparing the nest for the new season.

The Black Eagle Project Roodekrans (BEPR) had an interesting incident on Wednesday, March 22 when Fran de Lange, one of their monitors, reported another Black Eagle trying to encroach on Makatsa and Mahlori’s territory.

Both Eagles attacked the intruder with aggression in the sky going on for about 20 minutes before the intruder decided to fly off. The Black Eagle Project team monitors Makatsa and Mahlori every Tuesday morning in the basin below the Waterfall in the Botanical Garden.

“The Eagles are in the process of preparing the nest for the new breeding season and we’re expecting them to lay the first egg within the next 14 days,” Dougie Crewe from the BEPR said.
