Scammers are now pretending to be cops

The Krugersdorp Police has released a statement warning community members about scammers now pretending to be police officers.

It has come to the attention of the Krugersdorp Police Station Commander Brigadier Happy Xaba and management that a number of the people, who had reported cases of hijacking and theft of motor vehicles, are receiving calls from people pretending to be police officials.

“The caller(s) will tell the victim(s)/complainant(s) that his/ her hijacked or stolen vehicle is recovered. Then the caller will ask the complainant/victim to deposit money via the money market or to a certain bank account number so that they can organise towing for the vehicle to his/her place.

“The station commander is appealing to the community to be extra careful, as the police will never ask them for any money from the complainant/victim after the vehicle or any property is recovered. He further advise the community to visit their nearest police station to verify if the caller is indeed the police,” said Krugersdorp Police spokesperson Captain Raymond Sebonyane.
