The 1st Eagles Scout Troop recently spent most of their day helping clean up a park in Krugersdorp North. This is all in the hopes of bringing back the scouts to Krugersdorp and also earning some points towards their community service stages.

Johan van Wyk who has been the scout troop master for the 1st Eagles since 2019 and also the Gauteng West Regional development officer for the scouts explained why they decided to clean this piece of land. The area is at the corner of Premier and Sixth Streets and also has a run-down hall on it.

He explained that the grass was overgrown and vagrants had been sleeping in the old building that had been used as the First District Township scout troop hall in the past. Apart from supporting the Democratic Alliance with a clean-up campaign Johan also wants to fix the old hall and start a new Krugersdorp scout troop in the hall.
“Scouting is becoming more visible,” said Johan, who is also a Springbok scout.
He explained that part of their service means that scouts have to do community service and also elevate their community, and the DA’s clean-up campaign allowed them to do both. Johan added that the community was very excited about the cleanup and getting rid of the vagrants.

About 20 people started at 08:00 and spent the day picking up rubbish and cleaning the 1.5-hectare piece of land. They finished at about noon and were even given a nice boerewors roll and a cold beverage as a thank you. They were also joined by councillor Mark Trump, another Springbok scout, and the Executive Mayor of Mogale City, Tyrone Gray.

The fire brigade then offered equipment and assisted in cutting the grass. The scouts then put the rubbish in a 6-ton skip that was provided. The next step is to add a new roof to the hall and put up a fence. If you would like to join the scouts or find out more about the scouts or the cubs you can contact Johan on 083 424 9769.
