Focusing on himself after six distinctions

'It is not that deep, there is more to life and matric taught me that' – St Ursula’s top achiever for the matric class of 2022.

Twelve years of continuous hard work has paid off for Yorke Coulson who is St Ursula’s top achieving matric for 2022. But now he said it is time to focus on himself.
Yorke has spent his years in school working hard to always do his best; something he says his parents encouraged.

“My parents have always encouraged me to do well and work hard to get to where I want to be, because nothing is guaranteed,” he said.

Yorke is very much the laat lammetjie being much younger than his brother and sister. He described himself as someone who is outgoing, energetic, creative, organised on the outside but confused on the inside.

He finished his matric year with six distinctions and was also the 2022 head boy at St Ursula’s. The plan is to take this year as a gap year and then go on to study psychology.

Yorke Coulson is excited for what life may bring.

School was his whole life for most of his life and this year he wants to figure out if psychology is the right thing to do and also gain some work and social experience.

He plans on not getting a nine to five job but will be working as a waiter, a tutor and will also try and sell some of his art. He wants to make money and enjoy his life before redirecting his focus once again to his studies.

At school he was also part of the choir, he co-directed, planned and acted in the school play, was into drama, swimming and was also part of a global compact for his school.

His passions is art and drama and this year he wants to take the time to focus on both, he also plans on continuing to pursue these when he continues his studies.

“It is important to me that you express yourself. I love languages and am also learning to speak French.”

Another passion of his is people and that is why he believes that psychology would be perfect as he wants to learn how people and their minds work.

He said he has noticed that no matter what you tell others they won’t listen to your advice until they have made the same mistakes. Laughingly he admitted to doing this himself. But if he had to give the matrics of 2023 some advice it would be to not procrastinate.

Adding that the year goes by so fast, they must not forget to stop and smell the roses, and don’t place to much weight to the year.

“It is not the be all and end all, does not mean that your life is over if you do not do as well as you planned.”

His favourite memory of school will be going into the Grade 8 orientation and thinking now he has made it. The most of his matric year was also a good memory; it taught him how to cope with certain things.

“It is not that deep, there is more to life and matric taught me that.”

He will miss the sense of security that school brought as well as the friend who became family.

In five years he hope to be successful in life and other things, and hopefully be in a movie.
