Mayor officially launches 16 Days of Activism campaign

With the GBV statistics growing at an increasingly alarming rate it is important that local government take a stand against it.

The gender based violence (GBV) statistics continue to grow at an alarming rate. Executive Mayor of the Mogale City Local Municipality launched the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children Campaign on November 25 at the Mogale City’s Centenary Hall.

This campaign was arranged by Community Development Services’ Social Development together with the South African Police Service, Department of Health and Justice Department to guarantee that the National Gender-based Violence & Femicide Strategic Plan 2020 – 2030 is fully implemented.

“We are all affected by the scourge and it is therefore our collective duty to imbue the spirit of Ubuntu and uphold the principles of Batho Pele. Together let us defend, protect and strengthen one another,” said the Executive Mayor Tyrone Gray when describing GBV within South Africa.

Every speaker highlighted the importance of raising awareness of the negative impact that violence and abuse have on women and children and how important it is to eliminate abuse within society permanently.

GBV Activist and author of the book Black Barren Yet Blessed, Ria Thetswe reminded guests that GBV is not only subjected to women and children, “It is not only men who abuse women, but women too abuse men in many ways including denying men access to their own children,” she said.

Also present to share light on the justice system processes was Krugersdorp Magistrate’s Court Manager Thembi Mazibuko who urged women to come forward and report perpetrators.
