Water levels dropping, warns MCLM

The municipality warns residents to use water sparingly due to low water levels.

The municipality has announced that residents may have experienced water shortages or low water pressure since the weekend for various reasons.

According to Mogale City Local Municipality (MCLM) communications officer Adrian Amod, Rand Water announced a significant decline in water levels due to excessive withdrawals by municipalities.

“With Level 1 restrictions put in place to avert a potential crisis, Rand Water has indicated that water supply levels across Gauteng, including within its reservoirs, are critically low. This situation is expected to worsen due to the ongoing heatwave,” Amod stated.

“Further, water storage could soon be depleted if municipalities do not comply with the restrictions. In light of this, Mogale City appeals to all residents and businesses to adhere to Level 1 restrictions implemented by the city on October 4, to prevent the complete depletion of the system and avoid the need for stricter Water Conservation and Demand Management measures,” he worryingly said.

He added a total power supply failure affected Rand Water’s Eikenhof Booster Station which is supplied by City Power, on Saturday, October 12. City Power technicians were still investigating the cause on Sunday and an estimated time for restoration is not yet known.

“This incident has negatively affected pumping at Eikenhof Pump Station and Mogale City reservoirs are likely to experience low water pressure. This will be further aggravated by increased water consumption due to the current heat wave. The municipality will continue to communicate with Rand Water to determine the status of the power failure and expected remedial timelines,” Amod concluded.
