Landfill site fires: ‘This situation is utterly unacceptable’

An opposition party says the situation at the Luipaardsvlei Landfill Site has a significant impact on people's health and well-being.

An opposition party has expressed major concern over the fires at the Luipaardsvlei Landfill Site.

Late on August 27, yet another fire broke out at the landfill site with smoke still hanging over town.

Recently, Mogale City Local Municipality (MCLM) said that they are doing their best to keep the situation under control, and condemns the act of arson, however, councillor Amy Steyn wishes to update the public on the situation regarding ongoing efforts to address the pressing health concerns associated with the landfill site.

“It is truly disheartening to hear the distressed voices of our community members, with individuals struggling to breathe and expressing their concerns through voice notes. The irritation of the ear, nose, and throat along with sneezing and coughing, are some of the alarming side effects that many of you are experiencing. This situation is utterly unacceptable, and we recognise the urgency with which it needs to be addressed,” she added.

She concluded that they understand the significant impact this situation has on people’s health and well-being and will make it a priority to keep all residents informed.
