Landfill site operations: ‘We’re doing all we can’

Municipality says they will advise on timelines for operations at the landfill site but resources have been increased as they are working towards full dousing.

Mogale City Local Municipality (MCLM) reassured residents their team is doing all they can to resume normal operations at the Luipaardsvlei Landfill Site.

Recently, MCLM’s communications officer Adrian Amod confirmed a case of arson has been reported to local police.

“The fire department has discouraged machinery usage and the team’s attempts to access the smouldering parts of the site due to heat and smoke that will adversely affect both workers and equipment. Open flames have been extinguished and the working team is now focused on eliminating smouldering however, expected strong winds could reignite the flames,” Amod said.

“The municipality is unable to, at this stage, to advise on timelines for the operation of the landfill site but resources have been increased as we are working towards full dousing. For safety reasons, the site is still closed for public and business use,” Amod added.

He concluded by apologising for the difficulties endured by residents, businesses, and other affected parties.
