West Rand drivers gather to discuss issues, solutions

During a seminar in Kagiso, many drivers who represent various transport associations across the West Rand discussed solutions for safer work environments.

More than 100 e-hailing cab drivers recently gathered at Chief Mogale Hall to discuss several issues affecting them.

The seminar saw drivers from various areas of the West Rand including Randfontein, Krugersdorp, Mohlakeng and Westonaria.

According to the West Rand E-hailing Association chairperson Mxolisi Vilakazi, the main reason for the seminar was to discuss safety, security and building relations with other transport associations on the West Rand. This includes talking about conflict with rival associations to e-hailing services.

“The conference was to network and build relationships with associations. The conflict of interest in our region always involves routes and competition among our associations. We discussed how to find an understanding with various organisations to come together and find solutions,” he said.

According to the Gauteng Transport Association chairperson, Biza Sekhu, there has been tension between drivers and the associations they represent since the launch of the West Rand-based e-hailing app Shesha (Zulu for ‘hurry’).

“Not only are drivers mainly affected by this issue but commuters as well. The issues among most of the associations that report to are both from external and internal matters. We appeal to many taxi bosses and associations to be more considerate and support their drivers. We also urge them to be wary of their passengers as well because they depend on us daily.”
