Power to entire Mogale City – municipality does not have exclusive rights

The municipality addresses community concerns and confusion about power cuts providing clear answers to residents.

Mogale City’s Energy Services appreciates the concerns voiced by residents over Eskom’s load-shedding deployment and wishes to provide clarity over those concerns.

According to a public statement issued by Energy Services, Mogale City has a constitutional mandate to provide power to its communities, but it does not have exclusive rights to supply the entire municipal jurisdiction area. Such power distribution rights and licenses are authorised by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa.

Residents are therefore urged to note that Mogale City is licensed to sell and distribute electricity to other parts of the city with the exclusion of Kagiso, Swaneville, Rietvalei, Muldersdrift, Tarlton, Hekpoort, Kromdraai and Magaliesburg.

Power utility Eskom is licensed to distribute and sell electricity directly to these areas and is also responsible for load-shedding or load-reduction without requiring any permission from the municipality.
