Leaking water meter frustrates K’dorp West residents

The most precious life source is being wasted due to a leaking water meter at a vacant hotel in Krugersdorp West – who is to blame?

A leaking water meter on Moorcroft Avenue outside a vacant hotel has become a growing concern for residents who say their repeated requests for repairs have fallen on deaf ears.

The issue was initially reported as a manhole but later clarified as a leaking water meter by a municipal worker in Mogale City’s Water and Sanitation sewage division. The employee, however, wishes to remain anonymous for fear of being victimised.

“As I told everyone it is not a blocked drain it is a water meter leakage,” the worker said. The worker further claimed that the councillor did look at the problem and informed them that it was not the municipality’s responsibility to fix it, but that the hotel owner should fix it.

According to concerned resident Vernon Cox, the matter has been reported to the municipality many times.

“For weeks now a manhole has been overflowing and water fills the streets of Krugersdorp West. Vehicles drive through the filthy water and people jump over it to cross the road, not to mention the fumes we have to breathe in,” Cox shared.

“Many times it was reported to a councillor and then we hear that the owner of the hotel was told it’s his responsibility to clean up and open up that drain, but nothing comes from that,” he elaborated.

The Krugersdorp News attempted in vain to reach out to the hotel owner for comment on the crisis but was informed that unfortunately, the owner of the hotel passed away not so long ago. It is alleged his sons are also not in the country at the moment. For now, the issue remains unsolved but an update will be published should any new information or developments come to light.

Mogale City Local Municipality’s communications officer Refilwe Mahlangu said they could not provide comment at this stage, however, their feedback will be published once received.
