Rand Water maintenance: ‘Recovery of Mogale City systems will be slow’

Mogale City Local Municipality has provided the latest update regarding the systems and progress of Rand Water's maintenance.

Mogale City Local Municipality (MLCM) met with Rand Water today, June 28 to discuss the progress following Rand Water’s scheduled extensive infrastructure maintenance.

In Mogale City, Bosasa flats in Summerfield were the first to be affected by this maintenance which started on 22 June. Rand Water released a media statement on June 24 announcing the maintenance of the F5 Pipeline in MCLM, which was the first phase of the proactive maintenance and entailed connecting the F16 Pipeline to the new F5 Pipeline to new meters was completed nine hours ahead of schedule.

During this period, the normal pumping of water was not affected as only one meter was impacted. Maintenance was then conducted on June 24 at the Eikenhof system which supplies Mogale City.

“Following an earlier meeting with Rand Water, we can report that maintenance work at the Eikenhof system has been completed but cleaning of the sedimentation tank is still ongoing,” Refilwe Mahlangu said on behalf of the MLCM’s Water Services Department.

According to the update provided by Refilwe, Eikenhof is currently pumping 1 000 megalitres of water per day below the required 1 200 megalitres.

This pumped amount not only supplies Mogale City but is also distributed to other municipalities.

“Consequently, the recovery of our systems will be slow due to the pumping deficit,” Refilwe added.

The reservoirs are currently operating and the percentages shown below are expected to stabilise with the community’s cooperation and responsible usage.

• Kagiso Reservoir: 17%
• Reservoir 2: 17%
• Reservoir 3: 8%
• Reservoir 4 supplying the CBD: 33%
