Burst pipes in Mogale: Repair work is underway, but …

Mogale City's water services division has commenced with repair work, however, residents are still frustrated with sinkholes now forming and water interruptions being identified.

Various parts of Mogale City have been without water for the past four days.

The issue has left many residents frustrated and even some services in town had to come to a complete halt as a result. On Tuesday, Mogale City Local Municipality (MCLM) issued a statement confirming that a technical team from its water services department already commenced repair work, however, there are still complaints from residents and businesses about water flooding their premises.

The Krugersdorp News went to visit some parts of the CBD where burst pipes could be seen. One of them was near the Krugersdorp Magistrate’s Court which led to flooding and the temporary suspension of services. While there have been some pipes being attended to, residents have complained that the damage has only been partially fixed.

According to resident Busi Steyn, who lives not too far away, Mogale City’s Water Management Division did attend to the burst pipe outside her driveway, however, the damage as a result of the municipality fixing the pipe was not repaired. This has caused a great inconvenience for her and her family.

“There are people who walk past my house every day and they have either been injured or close to it as a result of the sinkhole in my driveway. I’ve also had to take my child to hospital because he suffered a fracture to his leg after falling in the hole. The municipality cannot say they fixed the issue if they made it worse,” Steyn said.

The municipality has commenced repair work outside the local magistrate’s court but several parts of the CBD are still affected.

According to councillor Mark Trump, the burst pipes have caused a lot more issues going beyond water interruptions.

“The burst water pipes have not only impacted the daily routine of the residents but have also led to financial losses due to property damage and the need for repairs. Moreover, the lack of access to a reliable water supply puts the health and hygiene of our community members at risk, particularly during these challenging times. The municipality must prioritise the repair and maintenance of our water infrastructure to ensure the well-being and satisfaction of the citizens. Immediate attention should be given to this matter to restore normalcy and prevent any additional inconvenience for the residents,” Trump said.

Mogale City Water Management Services Division has confirmed that repairs are underway, however, in some parts residents have left frustrated for they deem to be a lack of urgency.
