Municipality takes big steps in road maintenance

Acting Executive Mayor Mandyu and councillor Koboekae joined the Public Works, Roads and Transport workforce in a road rehabilitation service delivery oversight on W3010 Road.

Acting Mogale City Executive Mayor councillor Kholeka Mandyu and member of the mayoral committee (MMC) responsible for Public Works, Roads and Transport, councillor John Jonty Koboekae recently embarked on a road maintenance project in the Smokedown Informal Settlement near Tarlton.

The W3010, which is a 400-metre rural gravel road, has two lanes which connect the Smokedown Informal Settlement to the R24 to Randfontein and Krugersdorp as well as Rustenburg.

According to Mandyu, the road rehabilitation service delivery oversight on the road took place during 2023 Transport Month held annually in October. The 2023 Transport Month campaign is held under the theme Siyakha – Growing Gauteng Together through Smart Mobility. The campaign is part of the provincial government’s commitment to accelerated delivery of transport infrastructure to support Gauteng’s economic recovery and growth.

“We want to provide efficient service delivery every day for a gravel maintenance programme, more so, in the rural areas. We remain committed as a municipality to providing good quality roads because Mogale City sits in the West Rand, which is one of the regions with infrastructure backlogs. We want to strengthen efforts to provide infrastructure projects that will drive economic growth in the area for the benefit of our people,” Mandyu said.

Koboekae added by saying, “The rehabilitation of the road will be beneficial for the residents of Smokedown informal settlement. Adding that the section of the road needed to be lifted as it was forming a low point where water was standing and creating mud holes during rain and making it difficult for motorists to navigate the road with ease. He confirmed that the project will take 10 days to be completed and is done with internal resources using an external service provider for plant hire, the material used to lift the road is obtained from the non-used stockpile of material that was excavated at new municipal office construction at the Mogale City Civic Centre.”

After the work was done Mandyu and Koboekae concluded the day’s work by donating groceries at the Kagiso Care for the Aged and donated a JoJo tank to the Tshwaraganang Lekgotlhelle Disable Community project in Munsieville. The project to do maintenance work on the road was just among the many initiatives to give back to the community by the municipality.
