Illegal miners back to haunt Windsor Road; section of road collapses

Windsor Road has been a recurring problem for motorists for over a year now and illegal miners have now made things worse and are to blame for why a section of the road collapsed as well.

Windsor Road, which has been closed for months due to much-needed repairs, suffered a heavy blow – literally. This after a section of the road collapsed.

Mogale City load-shedding forum admin Adrian Maytom confirmed to the Krugersdorp News that approximately 100 metres of the road were dug up and destroyed by illegal miners recently. SAPS have meanwhile attempted to clamp down on illegal mining activities in the area for a long time and the Krugersdorp News has reported that the road has been a problem for motorists since April 2022, if not longer. More than a year ago this road also had to be repaired after collapsing due to illegal mining activities.

According to a Mogale City Municipality Watchdog committee member, illegal miners are responsible for the destruction of the road.

Strategic and Tactical Operations Response Management Committee (Storm) chairperson Mark Trump also confirmed that he has received complaints from residents who live near the road that illegal activities taking place have gotten out of hand and has reported the issue to the police and the municipality.

“In my capacity as the Storm Section 79 chairperson for oversight, after receiving complaints from residents, I immediately took the information to SAPS and the municipality requesting for the issue to be investigated.”

Mark also added that local businesses fill up the holes dug by the illegal miners during the day and at night the miners return to open up the holes again.

Windsor Road has been blocked off to prevent accidents.

The News has approached Mogale City Local Municipality (MCLM) for several weeks to understand if there will be any updates as to when the road will be open for the public, however, MCLM is yet to respond.

The road has been closed off and residents are warned to not go near Shaft, Contour, Railway line, or Windsor roads.

The News will provide more updates as the story develops.
