Lewisham water crisis takes a turn for the worst

Scheduling a bath/ shower or even doing laundry sounds like a mission in Lewisham.

Lewisham residents are outraged because of the city’s water crisis.

For the past nine years, the community of Lewisham have been battling with low water pressure, however, this took a turn for the worst in the recent months as residents say that they have “little to no water”. Numerous streets and homes are affected.

Annelene Martins said that the issue has been an ongoing matter so much so that people have scheduled their lives around it.

“During the week, we can wash our clothes and bathe/shower early in the morning, but only before 05:00. Only after 20:00 can you bathe or shower as you would during the day. Before 20:00, there is no water from the geyser and little cold water due to a lack of pressure,” she elaborated.

She added that during the weekend, the situation is different again.

On weekends, you can use water before 06:00, but for the rest of the day there is very little to no water [hot or cold] until about 17:00,” she said.

Erna Brits, who is also a resident of Lewisham, said that they have complained about the matter numerous times but their complaints have fallen on deaf ears.

“They said the problem is with Rand Water but nobody does anything about the issue.”

The News contacted Rand Water’s spokesperson, Makenosi Maroo, who stated that the problem is not with Rand Water and that affected community members should contact Mogale City Local Municipality (MCLM) as they would be aware of the problem.
