Perjury can result in jail time, warns police

Brigadier issues a warning to the public regarding perjury.

West Rand District Police spokesperson Captain Solomon Sibiya warns the community of making false police reports where so-called ‘suspects’ are arrested as a result.

“Reporting false cases to the police is a serious and punishable offence. Human, physical and financial resources are used to assist victims of crime. Therefore, misleading law enforcers cannot be tolerated,” warned Brigadier Mabatha of the Kagiso police.

In a recent incident, Sibiya said police received a complaint from a man who alleged his friend sent him a text message saying that he was kidnapped by ‘unknown suspects’.

“The man further escalated the complaint to the suspects’ vehicle tracking company. Police and the tracking company’s investigations established that the man [the kidnapped friend] provided misleading information. Police found that he was still in possession of his car,” Sibiya added.

“The man was arrested and is facing charges of defeating the ends of justice and perjury,” Sibiya concluded.
