Police arrest man who sexually abused girl

Police in Kagiso arrested a man after allegedly sexually assaulted his neighbour's daughter.

Police in Kagiso have arrested a 61-year-old man for the alleged rape of a 12-year-old girl.

According to police spokesperson Captain Solomon Sibiya, on May 31, the mother of the victim left her daughter home alone at about 18:00 that night and gave their house keys to their neighbour.

Later when she returned home, she knocked at the neighbour’s dwelling to collect the key but he took some time to open it. She then found her daughter with the neighbour inside the dwelling.

Days later the victim confessed to her mother that the neighbour took time to open the door because she was still naked as he had just raped her.

The mother reported the matter to the police and the neighbour was arrested. Following this incident, Sibiya urged parents to be aware of their children’s safety.

“At this time of the year, different spheres of government advocate for the protection of children, but yet other parents ignore such messages and efforts. We call upon everyone to protect our children in whatever means,” Sibiya said.

The man is expected to briefly make an appearance in court this week.
