Alleged scooter thief nabbed

Security officers apprehended a man allegedly part of the scooter thief gang.

Multiple reports of two men on scooters allegedly robbing community members of their belongings in four separate incidents have been circulating since May 9.

The first incident involved a domestic worker who had her handbag snatched from her in Rant-en-Dal. Then, there was an attempted robbery of another domestic worker’s personal belongings in Monument. The third incident was a robbery of personal belongings in Noordheuwel and the fourth was a home invasion, also in Noordheuwel.

According to an official statement by Marcel Coetsee from Dowry Security, the perpetrators were sighted as they did patrols.

He said they were eventually tracked down and cornered in the Monument area on Voortrekker Road.

“When they discovered that they had been spotted, one of the perpetrators jumped off the scooter and fled on foot. Another perpetrator on a scooter was then chased through the suburbs but reaction officers eventually apprehended him in Krugersdorp West.

“The perpetrator was accompanied by our reaction officers to various locations to try and locate his accomplice. The first perpetrator is still at large and there are current investigations and operations with police underway to track down the perpetrator. The scooter of the arrested perpetrator has since been confiscated.”

Coetsee added, “If there are any other individuals that have fallen victim to this crime we urge you to come forward and open up a case at Krugersdorp Police Station.”
