Police warn of hotspots as crime spikes

Police have warned residents of Kagiso and surrounding areas about the increase in numerous crimes.

Police are warning people about the increase in numerous crimes including assault, theft, hijacking, house robbery, armed robbery, kidnapping, and murder.

According to West Rand District Police spokesperson Captain Solomon Sibiya, some parts of town have been dubbed extremely dangerous hot spots, especially at night.

Those hot spots include Extension 12 and the area near the clinic, Swaneville, central Kagiso, Ext 9, 13, and 14. Kagiso Police management has also noted that the crimes mentioned occur mostly from midnight or between 19:30 and 02:30.

“We are warning members of the public entering or leaving Kagiso to be more than vigilant and cautious or refrain from driving, walking or parking in such areas late at night,” said Captain Sibiya.

Over the weekend, a man was nearly robbed of his vehicle and firearm just before 03:00 while at the entrance of his girlfriend’s place in Ext 9. This was after two perpetrators suddenly appeared and attempted to disarm him.

In a separate incident at about 02:00 on February 18, three armed perpetrators held someone at gunpoint while walking in the street in Ext 12. The victim was also ordered to let his family members open the door. Once they were inside the victim’s home, the perpetrators tied up the family. They then ransacked the house.

“Residents must form or revive community structures like a CPF which will assist in the formation of street committees, neighbourhood watch, etc. If you know anyone who is involved in any criminal activities in your area, please don’t tell your friend or neighbour, rather call the police.”
