Young man sentenced to life in prison for 2023 murder

The Kagiso police have praised one of their own who managed to have a man successfully convicted for a murder he committed in 2023.

Warrant Officer Tau Mogoboya, an experienced member of the Serious and Violent Crimes Unit, managed to have 25-year-old Sifiso Tshabalala sent to prison for life through his excellent investigation skills.

West Rand Police spokesperson Captain Solomon Sibiya explained that at about 04:00 on July 31 2023, Tshabalala and his six accomplices arrived at a shack in Tshepisong. They then knocked and asked for cigarettes and dagga after which they kicked the door open.

“On entering the shack, Tshabalala opened fire at three victims. One of the victims, also a 25-year-old man, was later certified dead on the scene by paramedics. The other two victims aged 34 and 36 sustained gunshot wounds and were rushed to hospital. A case docket of murder and two of attempted murder were registered at Kagiso Police Station.”

Mogoboya was allocated the case docket to investigate. He worked tirelessly and eventually arrested the perpetrators, displaying outstanding investigative skills.

The case was placed on the roll and the murder accused Tshabalala stood trial at the Johannesburg High Court where it found him guilty on multiple charges.

He was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for murder, 10 years for each of the two attempted murders, 15 years for robbery, 10 years for possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition, five years for assault GBH, and a further five years for possession of a dangerous weapon (a knife).

“All charges will run concurrently except for the life sentence,” Sibiya said.

Furthermore, the accused was declared unfit to possess a firearm.
