Alleged turf war between illegal miners a concern

There are concerns that a zama zama turf war is brewing close to home.

What was supposed to be a quiet night out for loved-up couples celebrating Valentine’s Day, quickly turned into something resembling a warzone in the Luipaardsvlei area.

This was after the community was warned to avoid the area near Windsor Road due to heavy gunfire among zama zamas (illegal miners).

Chris Le Roux lives in the area and said gunshots could be heard loud and clear since about 19:10. He is also concerned that this is not the first time this has happened in the area.

“We hear gunshots and violence more often than you think. My roof was damaged a few months ago due to shootings taking place. It is concerning,” he said.

According to Mogale City councillor Lourens Gouws, the shooting was allegedly between rival zama zama gangs.

He added that police and other law enforcement were in the area.

The police have issued no official statement as yet. However, watch this space for more information.
