Young man arrested with illegal firearm, plenty of ammo

The police's intensified crime-fighting focus ahead of the festive season has paid off.

A 26-year-old man was arrested recently as part of the Kagiso police’s effort to intensify their fight against crime before the festive season.

Captain Solomon Sibiya explained they focused on violent crimes aimed at women and children. They arrested the perpetrator on October 20 at the Madala hostel following complaints of a shooting and killing earlier.

“Members of the crime prevention intensified their patrols in and around the hostel. They were following information about a suspect who was dealing in drugs at the hostel when they noticed a group of men sitting under a tree.”

Sibiya explained that as police were approaching, the group fled in different directions. They noticed that one man was armed and chased him, he ran into a room and locked himself in but police managed to get to him.

“The suspect was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and fifty rounds of ammunition.”

He was arrested and detained at the Kagiso Police Station where he was charged with unlawful possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

“He is due to appear briefly in court and the recovered firearm will be subject to ballistic tests to find out if it was not used in the commission of any violent crime.”
