The municipality has become aware of an individual who scams businesses and residents to pay their accounts that are in arrears.

It has come to the attention of Mogale City Local Municipality (MCLM) that a person by the name of Derrick van der Merwe using telephone number 072 797 9741 is calling on businesses and residents to pay their accounts that are in arrears.

According to MCLM communications officer Refilwe Mahlangu, this is a scam.

“The scammer also provides customers with alternative payment options for example e-wallet payments. Members of the public are urged to note that this person is not an employee of the municipality, nor one of our appointed service providers.

As a government entity, the municipality does not ask for account payment via e-wallet services, rather allow for account payment through trusted platforms as direct payments at our Revenue Offices, via trusted retailers, EFT payments and other,” Mahlangu added.

“We therefore urge all residents to be vigilant and avoid making any payments via non-trusted platforms, and report suspected fraud on 011 951 2595 or 011 668 0712.”
