According to Krugersdorp Police spokesperson Captain Raymond Sebonyane, properties such as motor vehicles, electric appliances, and any other items are advertised on social media and are being sold at a reasonable price but, the victim(s) fall into prey and contact the criminals through cellphone and make arrangements for payments before confirming the true whereabouts of the seller, property involved or if the dealership is legit.

“Immediately after transferring cash and as soon as the suspect receives the money, the suspect disappears without a trace.

“Now recently, scammers will call the victim and said they are working for a certain bank in the fraud department. The caller will tell the victim that the is someone trying to withdraw money from his/ her bank account, and ask the victim to change his/her security pin and suddenly there will be a withdrawal on the victim’s account.”

Krugersdorp Police Station Commander Brigadier Happy Xaba is appealing to the community to be careful when buying products from social media as they end up getting lured off their money and not getting the property they purchased.

He urged the community to get full particulars of the seller and ask the nearest police station for assistance to verify the dealership before making any banking transactions.

“I advise the community to visit their nearest bank branches to verify if the caller indeed is an employee of such bank.”
