Latest marketplace phishing scam

'Hundreds of South Africans are being duped by this marketplace phishing scam - here’s how to stay safe this festive season' – Gumtree.

Gumtree South Africa has issued a warning that scammers are using a convincing phishing scam to obtain bank card information from people selling their goods on Gumtree and Facebook Marketplace.

According to Louis Bosman, Head of Customer Service at Gumtree, many customers have reported the scam or asked the platform to confirm the legitimacy of the offer in recent weeks. The scam targets individuals who are selling goods online on marketplace sites.

“The scammer makes contact via the contact number displayed on the seller’s ad, showing interest in the item. They would then suggest using Gumtree’s shipping/delivery option because it is safe. They prefer to contact users through WhatsApp,” said Bosman.

“No such service exists at this time. There will always be a redirect link in the WhatsApp message where the payment can be finalised.”

After the seller clicks the link, they are asked to input their banking details on a branded website, supposedly to receive funds from the scammer. Unfortunately, this is where the scammer gains access to their card details, including the CVC details.

Bosman urged South Africans to be vigilant and never click on suspicious links received via WhatsApp or email.

“We recommend using Gumtree’s messenger as it is safer and to reach out to our contact centre if you have any concerns about a transaction.”
