Three arrested in Hekpoort for copper cable theft

'Cable theft results in affected communities not having electricity supply for days or weeks and can also interfere with the supply of internet and even telephone communication' – Police.

Three men were arrested by the Hekpoort police after they were caught in possession of stolen copper cables.

Sergeant Gloria Maswanganye from the Hekpoort Police Station explained that they arrested the three men aged 34, 46 and 47 on Monday, August 15 along the R563 Hekpoort road.

Sergeants Ndateni Phosa and Eva Leboko from the Hekpoort police conducted a vehicle control point on the R563 next to the Oostermoed garage where they stopped and searched vehicles. They were searching for stolen or hijacked vehicles, and vehicles transporting illegal firearms, drugs and suspected stolen goods.

At about 08:30 they stopped and searched a taxi that was transporting passengers to Krugersdorp, and found a suspected stolen copper cable. It was in the possession of three male passengers, and they subsequently were arrested.”

The preliminary investigation revealed that the cable was cut on one of the farms in the Hekpoort area. All three suspects are expected to appear in the Krugersdorp Magistrate’s Court soon and will have to answer to charges of tampering with and damaging essential infrastructure. The men were also found to be in the country without legal documentation.
