More cries for justice as 61 illegal miners appear in court again

Community members together with members of different political parties again protested outside the Krugersdorp Magistrate's Court calling for zama zamas to leave their communities.

More cries for justice were heard outside the Krugersdorp Magistrate’s Court early Wednesday morning August 10 as 61 of the 80 illegal miners arrested and charged in terms of the Immigration Act 13 of 2002 recently were set to appear.

Herald journalist Nonkululeko Mathebula-Maqhwara reported from outside court on Wednesday that the situation was calm as there was a much smaller crowd compared to previous appearances. Police were present.

Community member Matsela Lefakane said, “We are calling for justice in this case and we want these men behind bars. Their actions truly hurt the nation and they must be brought to book. With our support, we are certain that justice will be served.”

Action SA and other community members protesting outside the Krugersdorp Magistrate’s Court again on Wednesday August 10.

Action SA community leader Themba Mabunda explained their presence outside court.

We are not here for political gain. We are here to show support to these women who are part of our society. We are also here to call for these illegal miners to exit our communities,” said Mabunda.

Last week the News reported that the state had asked for postponement for further investigation, and police requested the accused be remanded for an identity parade and to determine whether they could be linked to other crimes.

To date, hundreds of illegal miners have been arrested in the District in the wake of the tragedy in West Village on July 28 when a film crew was attacked and eight women were raped. This past weekend Police Minister Bheki Cele said the rape victims had identified some suspects.
