Criminal who stole goods worth R100k sentenced for 2020 break-in

A 26-year-old man was handed a seven year prison sentence after fingerprints connected him to a 2020 housebreaking.

Nhlanhla Nelson William Gumede who was linked to a housebreaking in Mindalore two years ago has been sentenced to seven years imprisonment by the Krugersdorp Magistrate’s Court.

Krugersdorp Police spokesperson Captain Raymond Sebonyane said the 26-year-old Gumede from Tshepisong West Block 4 was sentenced last Thursday, July 14.

“The man was identified by means of fingerprints and linked to a housebreaking that was committed on February 11, 2020. The incidents took place on Wege Street in Mindalore.”

The complainant in the case believed the break-in happened between 09:00 and 11:45 on February 11 while he was at the Key West Shopping Centre. A Sony PlayStation 4, Titan PRO 29ER FULL carbon bicycle, cell phone chargers, and a Garmin Edge cycling computer were stolen. The value of the stolen items were estimated to be R100 000 and a case of housebreaking and theft was opened. Fingerprints were taken on scene but at first no one was arrested.

After thorough investigation by detective Sergeant Sebokwana Maenetja it came to light that Gumede was already serving a five-year sentence in the Krugersdorp Correctional Service facility for another case.

“The case was sent for trial and on July 14 the accused was found guilty, sentenced to seven years imprisonment and declared unfit to possess a firearm. The court ordered that the sentence be served concurrently with the sentence he is currently serving.”

Acting Krugersdorp Police station commander Colonel Senne Mogotlane applauded Maenetja for a job well done.
