Popcru hosts event for men

The aim was to shine the spotlight on men and mental health.

On July 6 the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union’s (Popcru) Dr Yusuf Dadoo branch hosted an event for their members in the Krugersdorp Correctional Services’ mess hall to address issues pertaining to men’s mental health.

The two main themes of the event were “Men must talk” and “Down with the idea that men are not allowed to cry”. Different speakers addressed different topics such as gender-based violence (GBV), living with chronic illness, dealing with grief and mental health, and depression. Representatives of Metropolitan gave financial advice. Before ending with lunch there was a candle-lighting ceremony to pledge against GBV.

According to the secretary of the branch, Agnes Ngubeni, the event was a success and they are planning to host more, similar events in the near future.
