GBV victim gets help from Muldersdrift community

The Muldersdrift community again stood together in times of trouble, this time reaching out to a victim of gender-based violence.

The Muldersdrift community recently showed they care when they assisted a mother who lost everything in a house fire.

Christine Plaatjie, a resident from Video in Muldersdrift was a victim of gender-based violence (GBV) at the beginning of June when her ex-boyfriend allegedly set fire to her home. The building was gutted, and Christine and her children were left with nothing.

A case was opened at the Muldersdrift Police Station and the man was arrested shortly afterwards, but the damage had already been done. Christine is unemployed and all she and her family had left was the clothes on their backs.

A bakkie load full of donations from the Muldersdrift community to help Christine Plaatjie.

A desperate Christine phoned Councillors Shenan Cochrane and Greg Dalton because she did not know where else to turn. An appeal was sent out on various Muldersdrift community WhatsApp groups to assist with clothing, bedding and household donations.

Inez Benade, the owner of Harvest Feeds on Drift Boulevard in Muldersdrift, agreed to be the collection point for donations and very quickly the community responded.

On Wednesday afternoon, June 8, Shenan, Greg and Inez delivered a bakkie load of donations to Christine and her family to help them get back on their feet.

We can’t thank the residents of Muldersdrift enough for their amazing assistance by responding so quickly to help this family who are in dire straits. It is a privilege to serve the Muldersdrift community who always stand together in times of trouble,” said Shenan.
