Police, govt and community strengthen bonds in Magalies

The aim of the campaign was to engage with community members and address problematic and numerous social issues that led to criminal activities within the community of Magalies.

Police in Magaliesburg along with numerous stakeholders including government joined forces recently to strengthen bonds in the community.

They held a mass crime awareness and education community outreach campaign at Ga-mogale in Magaliesburg from 11:00 to 14:00 on Friday March 18.

Besides the Magaliesburg Police leading from the front, their Victim Empowerment unit, members of West Rand Youth Development, Gender-based Violence Brigade, Westview Clinic, Men’s Forum, the Departments of Social Development, Traditional Affairs and Health, even faith-based organisations were involved.

Magaliesburg Police spokesperson Sergeant Kgomotso Mogwere said the aim was to engage with community members and address problematic and numerous social issues that led to criminal activities within the community.

The topics focused on included gender-based violence (GBV), substance abuse, parent and child abuse, child negligence, domestic violence, assault and public violence.

The consequences of these crimes were strongly highlighted,” said Sergeant Mogwere.

Crime-prevention tips, information about victim support structures, and pamphlets with relevant information from different stakeholders were also given out.

“Community members are encouraged to work with the police in the fight against crime by reporting any suspicious and/ or criminal activity on the Crime Stop number 08600 10111 or using the SMS number 32211 and remain anonymous.”
