Kagiso crime stats: Murder and kidnapping increase, sexual offences decrease

The police recently revealed the crime statistics for the third quarter of the 2021/2022 period and as always there were the good, the bad and the ugly.

Below are the latest crime statistics for Kagiso only.

With as many as 37 crime categories mentioned in a detailed presentation by the police, Kagiso featured in the top 30 stations ranked in the country on 16 occasions.

Regarding community-reported serious crimes Kagiso placed 28th in the country with an increase of 20,5%; contact crime (11th and an increase of 11,2%); murder (sixth and an increase of 54,4%); attempted murder (25th and an increase of 33%); kidnapping (13th and an increase of 144%); assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm (18th and an increase of 5,7%); common assault (fourth and an increase of 28%); trio crimes (22nd and an increase of 12,5%); carjacking (21st and an increase of 105%); robbery at residential premises (25th and an increase of 3%); robbery of cash-in-transit (18th despite a decrease of 50%); contact-related crimes (ninth and an increase of 64,4%); malicious damage to property (eighth and an increase of 68 %); illegal possession of firearms and ammunition (tenth despite a decrease of 9%); driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs (12th despite a decrease of 35,8%).

PLEASE NOTE: Information below was made available by the South African Police Service and is for the period October 1, 2021 to December 31, 2021.

The following crimes have shown an increase:

CRIMES AGAINST THE PERSON:

• Murder by 54,4% (from 33 in the same period 2020/ 2021 to 51)
• Attempted murder by 38,1% (from 21 in the same period 2020/ 2021 to 29)
• Assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm by 5,7% (from 175 in the same period 2020/ 2021 to 185)
• Common assault by 28,1% (from 260 in the same period 2020/ 2021 to 333)
• Common robbery by 29,4% (from 34 in the same period 2020/ 2021 to 44)

AGGRAVATED ROBBERY:

• Carjacking by 104,8% (from 21 in the same period 2020/ 2021 to 43)
• Robbery at residential premises by 3% (from 33 in the same period 2020/ 2021 to 34)

CONTACT-RELATED CRIMES:

• Malicious damage to property by 67,6% (from 105 in the same period 2020/ 2021 to 176)

PROPERTY-RELATED CRIMES:

• Burglary at residential premises by 4,4% (from 91 in the same period 2020/ 2021 to 95)
• Theft of motor vehicle and motorcycle by 51,6% (from 31 in the same period 2020/ 2021 to 47)
• Stock theft by 100% (from 0 in the same period 2020/ 2021 to 1)

OTHER SERIOUS CRIMES:

• All theft not mentioned elsewhere by 49,5% (from 107 in the same period 2020/ 2021 to 160)
• Commercial crime by 44% (from 25 in the same period 2020/ 2021 to 36)
• Shoplifting by 72,7% (from 11 in the same period 2020/ 2021 to 19)

The following crimes have shown a decrease:

CRIMES AGAINST THE PERSON:

• Sexual offences by 16,9% (from 59 in the same period 2020/ 2021 to 49)
• Robbery with aggravating circumstances by 10,9% (from 165 in the same period 2020/ 2021 to 147)

SEXUAL OFFENCES:

• Rape by 17% (from 53 in the same period 2020/ 2021 to 44)
• Attempted sexual offences by 100% (from 1 in the same period 2020/ 2021 to none)

AGGRAVATED ROBBERY:

• Robbery at non-residential premises by 50% (from 26 in the same period 2020/ 2021 to 13)
• Robbery of cash-in-transit by 50% (from 2 in the same period 2020/ 2021 to 1)

CONTACT-RELATED CRIMES:

• Arson by 100% (from 2 in the same period 2020/ 2021 to none)

PROPERTY-RELATED CRIMES:

• Burglary at non-residential premises by 21,1% (from 19 in the same period 2020/ 2021 to 15)
• Theft out of or from a motor vehicle by 17,1% (from 41 in the same period 2020/ 2021 to 34)
