Girl aged four hospitalised following pit bull attack

When three young siblings and two other children were attacked by a neighbour's pit bull, a ten-year-old tried in vain to protect her four-year-old sister from being mauled.

A family from West Village’s quiet Saturday afternoon was turned upside down when six children were attacked by a dog.

The four-year-old Amorey Coetzee is still in hospital following the attack as the family wait to hear from doctors about a way forward with her recovery.

On Saturday, November 6 just after 18:00 Amorey, her ten-year-old sister Verushka, eight-year-old brother Diwan and two other children walked to the shop to buy sweets. The shop is at the corner of their street and not even 40m from their home.

While on their way back the children were attacked by a pit bull terrier. Amorey sustained serious injuries and Verushka was also bitten when she tried to get herself and Amorey away from the dog.

Willem Coetzee, the children’s father told the News that they were sitting outside when he heard Diwan screaming for him to come and help. He rushed down the road and saw Verushka carrying an injured Amorey.

He immediately took off his shirt to wrap around Amorey’s wounds, although at that moment he did not know the extent of her injuries.

When Willem went to check where the children were attacked he found the owners of the pit bull’s gate wide open.

Verushka was treated at the hospital and returned home later that night, but Amorey is still in hospital and the family is waiting to hear when she will have surgery.

Another child who was at the shop was also attacked by the same pit bull. Willem said when he went to the shop the Neighbourhood Watch members were already helping the boy.

He wished to thank the Neighbourhood Watch for their help as well as the man who came out to help Amorey and Verushka get away from the dog.

Krugersdorp Police spokesperson Captain Raymond Sebonyane confirmed that the case is being investigated.

Willem told the News he was informed that the neighbour had surrendered the dog to the SPCA.
