Police say they have launched a manhunt for the thugs responsible for the cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery over the weekend.
At about 17:00 on Saturday, October 9 residents were baffled by two explosions. According to comments on Facebook the explosions could be heard from Mindalore to Noordheuwel.
National Police spokesperson Colonel Athlenda Mathe confirmed that while a G4S cash van was driving in Luipaardsvlei from Roodepoort towards Krugersdorp a black BMW came from the opposite direction and hit the van on the driver’s side, which caused the van to overturn.
A group of men alighted from the silver Prado SUV and placed an explosive on the cash van. After it had exploded, they placed another explosive on the van,” said Mathe.
After the second explosion the men were seen loading money bags into their vehicle before driving off towards Krugersdorp.
Mathe said a white Mercedes-Benz blocked the road towards Krugersdorp while a white Polo TSI blocked the road towards Roodepoort while the robbery was in progress.
“After the robbery the Mercedes and the Polo escorted the Prado towards Krugersdorp.”
Both the occupants of the G4S vehicle had sustained injuries during the robbery and were rushed to hospital.
Police have launched a manhunt for the group responsible for the CIT robbery. Police are also appealing to members of the public who might have seen or have information on this incident to come forward and assist the investigations.”
